Ethics in Action Making Ethical Choices

You will learn to get into the complexities of ethical decision-making through the exploration of real-life situations. The World Wide Love and Consulting wants you to engage in thought experiments and examine ethical theories, including Consequentialism, Deontology, and Ethical Pluralism. You will gain practical tools for ethical reasoning and explore the challenges of balancing conflicting moral principles. Through this, you will gain ideas on how to come up with ethical choices to put into moral action.

Making judgments, actions, or decisions based on moral values and principles is an example of ethics at work. It is about doing the right thing, even if it is difficult to do or unpopular with many people. Let me explain in simple terms. Assume you have a set of laws or principles in your head that tell you what is right and wrong. These guidelines serve as a compass to guide you through life. These rules can stem from your family, your culture, or your own beliefs. Now, if you are faced with a decision or a situation in which you must select how to behave, you must consider what those rules or principles state. You should ask yourself the following questions:

1. Is this an honest and truthful action?

2. Will it treat people fairly and respectfully?

3. Is it harmful to others or beneficial to them?

4. Is it lawful and within society’s rules?

Making ethical decisions entails evaluating these concerns and coming to a judgment that is consistent with what you think to be right and just. It’s similar to being a nice person and doing what you feel, deep down, is the correct thing to do.

Let’s imagine you find a wallet on the street that contains money and identification. Returning the wallet to its owner is an ethical choice because it is honest, fair, and assists someone in need. Keeping the money for oneself is immoral since it is deceptive and unfair. So, ethics in action is about making moral decisions and doing what you believe is right, even if it is not always easy. It’s about being a decent person and using your decisions to make the world a better place. To demonstrate more understanding in this context, let’s consider the following example:

A coworker unintentionally left their notepad open on their desk while at work. You become intrigued and discover that it contains confidential and sensitive information about their difficulties and bad experiences in the company. This is when ethics comes into play.

To live an ethical life, one must embark on a road of personal development through virtue cultivation. By focusing on character development and moral education, we equip ourselves with the tools to make ethical decisions and create flourishing relationships. Ancient philosophical systems, such as Aristotle’s virtue ethics, continue to be useful in navigating the complexities of today’s ethical quandaries. By accepting and practicing virtues in our activities, we promote personal growth and contribute to a more ethical and harmonious community
